Thank you for stopping by my freshly minted blog. I am Allison Hebert Watson, an American from Chicago (South Side) living and cooking in South Africa. My family moved to Johannesburg in 2008, just over four years ago. We love living here and consider it home. I must admit I do miss some of the many food institutions unique to Chicagoland – including family kitchens, chains, fine dining, stands food fests. So, my primary goal for this blog is to take a walk through a lifetime of food mostly from my hometown. I will veer off course along the way to give you a glimpse into life and food for me in this beautiful country.
South Africa is the perfect place to start a food blog because of the incredible quality of ingredients. The produce here is flavorful and wonderfully textured, qualities that are sadly lacking in a lot of produce available in US grocery stores. For instance here in SA every time one bites into an apple, sweet tart juice squirts out and runs down one’s chin.
T & Cs
This is not a light, low fat, low salt or low sugar food blog. It is the food I experienced in all its kilojouled (caloric) glory. Where it makes sense to lighten up recipes without sacrificing taste or texture, I will suggest lighter options.
Please refer to ingredient list in the recipe for exact quantities. Don’t rely on what you see in the photo as qualities will vary from the snaps.
The Name of the blog is The Homesick Chef @ thehomesickchef.com. I am not a chef. I am just a person who has been in love with food since second grade.
Hope you enjoy it and come back often!!
